How to Configure Onboarding Tours

By Magda Targosz · Editorial Team · April 10, 2026

This guide helps admins set up guided onboarding tours in Skill Studio AI to teach new users key platform features. Use it when launching tours for first-time logins or feature access to boost adoption.

Before You Start

  • Admin access to Skill Studio AI with permissions for Settings → Onboarding Tours.

  • Identified key UI elements and features for your target users (e.g., dashboard, course builder).

  • Branding assets like colors, logos, and fonts ready for customization.

  • List of user segments (e.g., L&D admins, compliance teams) and trigger events (e.g., first login).

  • Defined success metrics like tour completion rates for tracking.

Steps

  1. Access Onboarding Tours settings — Navigate to Settings → Onboarding Tours in the admin dashboard to open the configuration panel.

  2. Create a new tour — Click "Add New Tour," name it (e.g., "New Hire Onboarding"), and set basic options like auto-start on first login or specific pages.

  3. Define tour steps — Add steps with titles, descriptions, and pointers to UI elements like buttons or menus; include images or interactive hotspots for clarity.

  4. Configure triggers and targeting — Set when tours appear (first login, feature access, role-based) and target specific user segments for personalization.

  5. Customize appearance — Match branding by uploading logos, selecting colors, and adjusting fonts; preview to ensure it aligns with your platform style.

  6. Enable completion tracking — Turn on analytics to monitor user progress, completion rates, and drop-offs; set options to reset tours for refresher training.

  7. Test the tour — Preview in a test account, simulate user flows, and use controls like Next/Skip to verify smooth navigation and interactions.

  8. Activate and deploy — Save, publish the tour, and monitor initial usage via real-time analytics for quick iterations.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Keep tours concise (5-8 steps) with interactive elements like quizzes to maintain engagement and reduce drop-off.

  • Start with high-value features and use clear, jargon-free language tailored to user personas.

  • Make tours skippable and add feedback prompts at the end to gather insights for improvements.

  • Personalize by role (e.g., compliance tour for ops teams) and track metrics like time-to-value.

Troubleshooting

Tour doesn't appear on trigger

Check targeting rules, user roles, and page-specific settings; ensure "Show on all pages" is adjusted or shortcode added if needed.

Steps misalign with UI elements

Verify selectors for UI pointers in step config and re-test after platform updates.

Low completion rates

Shorten steps, add interactivity, or analyze drop-off points in analytics to refine flow.

Tour repeats unexpectedly

Review completion tracking settings and reset options; disable "Show only once" for testing only.
